Precision-Engineered. Analytically Gifted. Audiophile from the First Groove.
The Audio-Technica ART9XA is a reference-class moving coil (MC) phono cartridge that sets a remarkably high benchmark for detail retrieval, transient speed, and tonal accuracy at its price point. Designed for the serious vinyl enthusiast ready to take the step into true MC performance, the ART9XA delivers the kind of micro-dynamic resolution and high-frequency extension that moving magnet cartridges simply cannot match.
At the core of the ART9XA is a high-purity OCC (Ohno Continuous Cast) copper wire coil winding — a deliberately chosen material prized for its near-zero impurities, extremely low inductance (2.5 µH), and outstanding conductivity. The result is an MC cartridge capable of tracing the finest groove modulations with vanishingly low coloration, bringing studio-master-level transparency to your turntable setup.
The Shibata Stylus Advantage
Fitted with a nude Shibata stylus on a solid boron cantilever (0.28 mm diameter), the ART9XA accesses groove information that lesser stylus profiles leave untouched. Originally developed to play the outer bands of CD-4 quadraphonic records, the Shibata profile makes contact with the groove wall across a far wider surface area than elliptical or line-contact designs — dramatically reducing groove wear, lowering distortion at high frequencies, and unlocking the full 20 Hz – 50,000 Hz bandwidth the ART9XA is engineered to reproduce.
For audiophiles who have invested in high-resolution pressings, original Japanese imports, or 45 rpm audiophile releases, the Shibata stylus is one of the most capable tools available for reading every last fragment of encoded information.
Hand-Built ART Series Quality
Every ART9XA is hand-assembled and individually measured at the Audio-Technica factory in Japan — a level of quality control that ensures channel separation of 30 dB and output channel balance within 0.5 dB, straight out of the box. This is a cartridge built to perform consistently and reliably at the highest level of analogue playback.
The Ideal MC Cartridge for Whest Audio Phono Stages
With a low 0.2 mV output voltage, the ART9XA is designed for use with a dedicated, high-gain MC phono stage. It is an exceptional partner for the Whest Audio 20.SP0 and 20.DP0, and sits beautifully with the Whest 60S Pro and 60Se Pro — phono stages engineered to handle even the most demanding low-output MC signals with complete authority and noise-free amplification. Together, they form a front-end combination that rivals analogue systems costing many times more.
Important: Moving coil cartridges require a phono preamplifier with a compatible low noise MC input. The stylus assembly on the ART9XA is not field-replaceable — please handle with care.
Why Upgrade to a Moving Coil Cartridge?
Moving coil cartridges like the ART9XA use a fundamentally different transduction principle to moving magnet (MM) designs — the coil is lighter and moves within a fixed magnetic field, rather than a heavier magnet moving within a fixed coil. This lower moving mass translates directly into faster transient response, greater high-frequency extension, and a more accurate, grain-free presentation across the entire frequency spectrum.
