Our Story — Two Decades of Defining Vinyl Playback

About Whest Audio | World-Leading Phono Stage Designers | Hand-Built in London, England

Whest Audio is a London-based specialist manufacturer of Class-A phono stage preamplifiers, founded in 2003. For over two decades, we have designed and hand-built every product ourselves — no outsourcing, no production-line shortcuts, no compromise on components.

We make one thing, and we make it as well as it can be made: phono stages. From entry-level preamplifiers for vinyl newcomers to reference-grade units used in professional mastering studios, every Whest Audio product shares the same core engineering: discrete transistor Class-A circuit design, ultra-low noise floor performance, component-level channel matching, and precision RIAA equalisation for both moving magnet (MM) and moving coil (MC) cartridges.

Why we exist

Whest Audio was founded on a single conviction: vinyl reproduction deserved far greater engineering ambition than the market was offering. That conviction hasn't changed. In a market crowded with phono stages that prioritise looks over listening, we've stayed narrowly focused — small-signal audio design, nothing else — because specialising, not diversifying, is how you get genuinely better at something.

Who uses our products

Whest Audio phono stages are used by home audiophiles, professional recording engineers, mastering studios, and specialist vinyl archiving companies who require accurate, uncoloured signal reproduction. That professional trust — being chosen by people whose income depends on getting sound right — is the endorsement we value most.

How we build

Every unit is conceived, engineered, and hand-assembled in our London workshop by a small team of electronic engineers and vinyl enthusiasts. We don't outsource manufacturing, and we don't cut corners on components — a phono stage carries a very small signal that a poor design can easily degrade, so component quality and circuit discipline matter more here than almost anywhere else in an audio system.

Common questions

When was Whest Audio founded?
Whest Audio was founded in 2003 and has operated continuously from London for over two decades.

What makes a Whest Audio phono stage different?
Every model uses discrete transistor Class-A circuitry rather than integrated-circuit (chip-based) designs, hand-assembled in the UK, with support for both moving magnet and moving coil cartridges.

Are Whest Audio products used professionally, or only by home listeners?
Both. Our phono stages are used in domestic high-end systems as well as professional mastering and vinyl archiving facilities.

Where are Whest Audio phono stages made?
All Whest Audio products are designed and hand-built in London, England.

Our Philosophy — Music Is More Than Frequencies

At Whest Audio, one belief shapes every design decision we make:

True high fidelity is not a measurement exercise. It is an emotional one.

Specifications matter — and ours are exceptional. But specifications are not the destination. The destination is the living, breathing soul of a musical performance, arriving in your listening space completely intact — spatially accurate, tonally honest, dynamically alive, and emotionally compelling in the way that only the best vinyl playback systems can achieve.

This philosophy drives us to ask questions most manufacturers never consider:

  • How does a recording feel, not just measure?
  • What gives music its emotional weight, its spatial depth, its human truth?
  • How do we faithfully convey all of that through an analogue signal chain — from stylus tip to speaker — without loss, colouration, or compromise?

These questions are at the heart of everything Whest Audio builds. And they are the reason our customers don't just buy our phono stages once — they stay with the Whest Audio family for life.

STEC — Our Proprietary Listening Evaluation Standard

One of the most distinctive aspects of the Whest Audio design process is STEC — our own in-house vinyl playback evaluation framework, developed and refined over two decades of listening, research, and real-world client feedback.

STEC assesses every Whest Audio product across four essential dimensions of musical performance:

Dimension What We Evaluate
🌐 S — Space Soundstage accuracy — width, depth, height, and three-dimensional instrument placement within the stereo field
🎨 T — Texture The tactile, physical quality of reproduced sound — the bow on a string, the breath before a vocal, the weight and decay of a piano note
❤️ E — Emotion The capacity to convey the genuine emotional intent of a performance — the quality that separates a hi-fi system from a truly musical one
🧠 C — Comprehension Full simultaneous retrieval of every layer within a recording — musical, spatial, dynamic, and micro-detail information delivered completely and coherently

No product leaves our facility without passing the STEC evaluation at its respective price point. It is a rigorous standard — and one of the primary reasons Whest Audio phono stages deliver performance that consistently exceeds what their price suggests should be possible.

Two Decades of Client-Led Innovation

Perhaps the most powerful force shaping the Whest Audio product range is the direct, ongoing relationship we maintain with our global community of customers — spanning hi-fi enthusiasts and vinyl collectors, home audiophiles and professional mastering engineers, content creators and broadcast recording professionals.

Over twenty years, the insights gathered from thousands of real-world listening environments, cartridge pairings, system configurations, and professional applications have flowed directly back into our R&D process — informing every circuit revision, every component selection, and every new product we bring to market.

This is not a company that designs in isolation. Whest Audio listens — to music, and to the people who live for it.
