The Whest Audio Mastering Buffer BIIS is not a DAC. It is something altogether more interesting: a discrete Class-A analogue output conditioner that solves the single most significant problem in modern digital audio replay — and does so in a way that no digital upgrade, cable, or power supply can replicate.
The Problem With Digital Sources (And Why It's Not About the DAC)
Every CD player, network streamer, and digital transport on the market — regardless of price — shares a fundamental weakness in its analogue output stage. Despite producing genuinely high-resolution audio internally, these devices deliver their signal to your interconnect and preamplifier at only a fraction of their true capability. Poor current drive, inadequate voltage rails, and compromised phase response mean your £3,000 streamer is performing at roughly 40% of its potential.
This is not a digital problem. It is an analogue output stage problem. And the Mastering Buffer BIIS was engineered precisely to fix it.
How the BIIS Works
The BIIS accepts the analogue output of any CD player, streamer, or digital transport and passes it through an ultra-high-speed, fully discrete Class-A transistor stage — phase-aligned, high-current, and operating across a total bandwidth of 385kHz. The signal exits the BIIS with:
- Full voltage rail headroom — dramatically extended dynamic range
- High-current drive — the ability to drive any interconnect cable without signal loss (tested to 50 metres)
- Phase-aligned output — correct phase response under load for the first time from your digital source
- Channel-matched frequency response — to within 0.1dB per channel
The improvement is not subtle. In Whest Audio's own listening tests, a 1996 Marantz CD63 KI Signature connected via the BIIS consistently outperformed a 2018 MBL C31 (a £10,000+ reference CD player) playing without one — across every parameter: dynamics, bass definition, clarity, and realism.
Two Inputs for Ultimate Flexibility
The updated Model BIIS features two analogue inputs, allowing two digital sources to share a single BIIS — ideal for systems combining a CD transport with a network streamer or two streaming sources. One switch; two sources; one transformative improvement in sound quality.
The Intelligent Digital Upgrade
The BIIS makes a compelling financial argument: a £400–£500 CD transport running through the BIIS will outperform any standalone CD player up to £4,000. When that transport eventually fails, you simply replace the £400 player — not a flagship machine. Future-proof, cost-effective, and sonically transformative.
