Step 3: Create the Metal Stamper

The stamper is the industrial mould used to press the grooves into every single copy of the record. It must be incredibly accurate — even the smallest imperfection at this stage will be replicated across thousands of pressings. High-quality vinyl production often involves creating multiple generations of metal parts (father, mother, and son) to preserve the integrity of the original lacquer.


Step 4: Prepare the Vinyl Biscuit

With the stamper ready, it's time to prepare the raw material. PVC granules — polyvinyl chloride, the material that gives vinyl records their name — are heated and compressed into a small, flat disc of molten plastic known in the industry as a biscuit or puck.

The quality of the vinyl compound matters enormously. Audiophile pressings often use virgin vinyl or 180g heavyweight vinyl, which produces a quieter, more durable record with superior sound quality compared to standard pressings made from recycled material.


Step 5: Press the Record

This is where the magic happens. The vinyl biscuit, along with the paper centre labels for both sides, is placed between two heated stampers inside a hydraulic record press. In a matter of seconds, the press closes with several tonnes of force, imprinting the grooves from both stampers simultaneously onto either side of the disc.

The record is then rapidly cooled under pressure to lock the grooves in place. The entire pressing cycle takes less than 30 seconds — a remarkable feat of industrial engineering that has changed very little since the mid-20th century.


Step 6: Trim, Quality Control & Packaging

As the freshly pressed record emerges from the press, excess vinyl around the edges — called flash — is trimmed away. Each record then goes through a quality control inspection, where trained eyes and ears check for visual defects, warps, and audio inconsistencies.

Approved records are sleeved into inner sleeves, inserted into their album artwork covers, and packed for distribution — ready to travel from the pressing plant to record stores and directly to the hands of vinyl collectors worldwide.
